The REAL ID deadline is coming – what you need to know

To fly domestically in the US, from May 7th 2025, you will need a REAL ID, valid passport, or trusted traveler program card (Global Entry or Nexus). This is the new deadline set by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) after delays due to the pandemic.

What is a REAL ID?

The REAL ID Act establishes minimum security standards for license issuance at the federal level. Passed by Congress in 2005, in response to 9/11 Commission’s recommendation that the Federal Government “sets standards for the issuance of sources of identification”. As of March 26, 2021, 55 states and territories are fully compliant with the REAL ID requirements.

How do I know if I’m REAL ID ready?

If your state-issued driver’s license / ID has a star (and/or flag) or says «Enhanced», it’s likely you have a REAL ID.

If you hold a driver’s license/ID from a state not yet compliant, and you use it to clear TSA Security at airports when travelling domestically, you will need to show an alternative acceptable form of identification once the deadline passes.
