7 simple steps to being a more sustainable traveller

Sustainable traveller

Looking to reduce your environmental impact while travelling for work? Whether you’re heading to a conference or meeting clients abroad, these eco-friendly travel tips will help you become a more sustainable and responsible business traveller. From cutting emissions to supporting local communities, here’s how to travel greener, without compromising on comfort or convenience.

1) Research local customs and sustainability practices

Before you travel, take time to learn about your destination’s local customs, culture and sustainability efforts. Respecting local traditions and engaging with communities is key to responsible travel. Use resources like the Arcadis Sustainable Cities Index to assess how eco-conscious your destination is.

2) Reduce energy use at home before you leave

Before heading out, unplug electronics such as TVs, computers and chargers. Turn off lights, lower your thermostat and adjust your fridge settings to save energy while you’re away.

3) Go digital with your boarding pass

Avoid unnecessary paper waste by downloading your boarding pass to your smartphone. Just make sure your airline accepts digital passes as some may still require printed versions.

4) Pack reusables: bottle, cup, bags and cutlery

Minimise single-use plastic by packing a reusable water bottle, coffee cup and shopping bags. Use apps like Refill to find free water refill stations worldwide. If you’re bringing reusable cutlery, remember to pack it in your checked luggage if flying.

5) Choose low-carbon transport options

Stay close to your meeting locations to reduce the need for transport. When you do travel, opt for public transport, walking, cycling or car-sharing with colleagues. Many cities offer bike-sharing schemes and some hotels provide rental bikes. For airport transfers, consider electric taxis or shared rides.

6) Book eco-friendly accommodation

Look for hotels with sustainability certifications or green initiatives. Check if they use renewable energy, support local communities or offer eco-friendly amenities like organic toiletries. While staying, conserve energy and water by reusing towels, switching off lights and taking showers instead of baths.

7) Eat local and seasonal

Support the local economy and reduce your carbon footprint by eating at locally owned restaurants that use seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. Avoid international chains and plastic-heavy takeaways when possible.

Why sustainable business travel matters

By making conscious choices, you can significantly reduce your environmental impact and contribute positively to the places you visit. These small changes add up, helping you become a more ethical, eco-conscious traveller.
