7 reasons to choose Sri Lanka as your next event destination

Sri Lanka might not yet be on every corporate event shortlist, but that’s exactly what makes it such an intriguing option. From global conferences to high-impact incentives, the country is fast becoming a destination that can both surprise delegates and deliver exceptional value for money.

Following a recent site visit with a client to its capital Colombo, Reed & Mackay Events experts Senior Event Manager Nicole Solomon-Gomez and Senior Global Client Success Manager Nity Tripathi unveil their top reasons why Sri Lanka deserves consideration for your next event.

1. A destination that feels fresh and authentic

Sri Lanka offers something increasingly rare in the events world: that feeling of discovery. Colombo – the destination’s largest city, situated on the island’s west coast – is a dynamic, multi-cultural city packed with rich local traditions and colonial history, while supported by modern development. And it doesn’t feel over-commercialised, Solomon says.

“Colombo still feels unexplored, which lends a sense of excitement,” Solomon-Gomez says. “You can really feel the British colonial influence and the country’s own rich history, especially when meeting locals and embarking on a walking tour through the city. For clients looking for a memorable destination, that sense of originality can be a major draw.”

Why this matters for events: Delegates can feel like they’re experiencing somewhere new and exciting, rather than another familiar conference city.

The country’s capital, Colombo, is already well-versed in hosting large-scale events

2. Good accessibility and strong infrastructure

Despite its emerging status, Colombo is easy to navigate. The international airport is just 45 minutes from the city via modern highways and the city itself is compact enough to get around easily.

“Sri Lanka is already well versed in hosting large-scale events, particularly major sports events, so the infrastructure is good to go. And Colombo airport isn’t so super busy that it’s crowded; in less than half an hour of landing, we had our luggage,” Tripathi says.

Why this matters for events: Smooth arrivals, reliable transport and government-backed infrastructure reduce friction for global delegates.

3. Five-star hotels and excellent value

Colombo boasts a strong inventory of five-star hotels, many with large on-site ballrooms. These are ideal for conferences where keeping delegates under one roof is critical.

“There are lots of wonderful authentic five-star hotels along Galle Face Road, facing the beach and Port City. They’re accessible, offer high security and are incredibly cost effective for what you get,” Solomon-Gomez explains.

From an organiser’s perspective, that value proposition is a key selling point.

“Even if you’re booking premium economy flights for delegates, Colombo comes out as a cost-effective option. The five-star hotel packages offer incredible value for money,” Tripathi adds.

Why this matters for events: Premium experiences without premium price tags make the destination ideal for conferences, especially those that double as incentives or offer delegates the opportunity to stay on.

Warm welcomes are standard in Sri Lanka

4. Hospitality that wows delegates

If there’s one takeaway both Solomon and Tripathi have when talking about Sri Lanka, it’s the hospitality. Sri Lanka’s service culture consistently exceeds expectations and leaves a lasting impression.

“The hospitality, warmth and friendliness of the staff and locals was one of the key highlights. It’s on another level, where we felt they went above and beyond to meet our needs,” Solomon-Gomez says.

That warmth is amplified when supported by the right local partners, Tripathi adds. “The Destination Management Company (DMC) we worked with made us feel genuinely special. With staggered arrivals and complex logistics, that level of care was a huge selling point and will really wow delegates,” she says.

Why this matters for events: Exceptional service elevates the entire experience and reflects positively on the host organisation.

5. CSR opportunities that resonate with boards and delegates

Colombo enables Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to be more than a tick-box exercise. There are opportunities to support local communities while creating emotional, purpose-led moments.

“The CSR opportunities completely changed my mindset on how this part of a programme can be so worthwhile. We visited a school for children with sight and hearing challenges and it created a real emotional outburst. It hit a chord with our client too,” Tripathi explains.

Solomon-Gomez agrees. “It was such an eye-opener in terms of where corporates can invest in local communities. We’re seeing more clients asking for CSR activities as part of their event, such as beach clean-ups and plant restoration projects, and Sri Lanka presents the chance to do something really impactful,” she adds.

Why this matters for events: Purpose-driven programmes can help align business objectives with social impact.

6. Unforgettable experiences

Colombo delivers cultural experiences that feel immersive and authentic without needing heavy production.

“If you go in with the right mindset and partner with the right DMC, the cultural elements are incredible. From heritage dancing to storytelling, every performance has meaning,” Tripathi says.

Solomon-Gomez highlights the flexibility this creates for planners. There’s such a huge variety of cuisine and venue options. The venues are unique and grand and there are also great contingency options if the weather changes.”

Why this matters for events: Experiences feel genuine and memorable and avoid feeling staged.

The destination’s vibrant culture is a key selling point

7. City, beach and beyond

Sri Lanka is a destination that offers an easy blend of city energy and beachside relaxation. “That proximity to the beach alongside a dynamic city is such a key selling point,” Solomon-Gomez says. “Sunsets along the beach would be amazing for informal evening activities and dinners.”

And Colombo is just the starting point. “If clients are open to travelling an additional couple of hours, there are even more beautiful destinations after you’ve experienced the metro feel of Colombo,” Tripathi adds.

Why this matters for events: The mix of city and beach destinations within easy access of each other make Sri Lanka ideal for multi-day programmes, trip extensions and incentives.

The destination is ready for events. With strong infrastructure, outstanding hospitality, competitive pricing and authentic experiences – mixed with that welcome freshness of not being overly-explored – it offers everything modern corporate events are looking for.
