How to navigate sustainability in corporate travel

Does your organisation’s senior leadership need more detail on CO2 data and messaging to support a more sustainable travel programme?

Listen to Reed & Mackay Global Sustainability Director Chris Truss’ insights during a podcast interview with our partner SQUAKE – which allows us to provide the most current, credible, granular CO2 data and messaging, at the point of sale, to our clients – earlier this year. Truss talks candidly about sustainability’s impact on businesses and its increasing prioritisation, plus highlights the trends and predictions around sustainability and the corporate travel market in 2024/2025.

Considering more train travel is one way to reduce the CO2 emissions of a travel programme

Key takeaways

Current trends in sustainability in corporate travel

Organisations are addressing sustainability in one form or another. Where feasible, they might be shifting from air to rail or from premium cabin classes to economy, where feasible.

Companies are starting to place sustainability at the start of their travel policies. Historically, the focus would have been on class of service or price.

They’re also taking a more active interest in what suppliers are doing about sustainability; for example, are airlines replacing their fleet with more fuel-efficient aircraft?

Clients are focusing on how to compensate or mitigate for their travel, purchasing ‘carbon compensation’ or Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) flights.

Sustainability in corporate travel: predictions for 2024/2025

The last two years have shown demand for corporate travel is still there. Yet the means and regularity of travel is under the lens and being reviewed.

In certain sectors we may see a change in corporate travel patterns. A large number of organisations have set carbon-reduction targets or have Net Zero pledges as businesses. So expect to see some companies travel less, some change the class of cabins they travel in and some purchase SAF.

Accurate data on CO2 emissions is essential to help support sustainability targets

How can Reed & Mackay help with sustainability targets?

Provides clients with accurate data they can rely on. For many of our clients, travel is part of their scope 3 emissions so they are looking for ways to mitigate/manage it as much as possible.

Clients have the ability to view information in granular detail and make choices based on carbon, price and class of service through our tools in an easy and intuitive fashion.

Supports with reporting of traveller emissions, providing information with context, which has the ability to drive behaviours.

Provides additional support to clients, should they need it, to inform them of the best strategies to implement, based on the data we’re providing. For example, what does their travel policy need to look like to get the best out of their employees, what are the route changes that can be made?

Delivers relevant industry updates and information to ensure they understand the landscape of the industry they operate in.
