With the latest reports showing 18.1 million Americans now identifying as digital nomads<\/a> \u2013 a 4.7% year-over-year increase \u2013 and more than 40 million people worldwide embracing the trend<\/a>, the shift is undeniable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For companies looking to attract and retain top talent, offering a hybrid work model that supports nomadic lifestyles is becoming a strategic advantage. But what happens when remote employees still need to travel for business?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1) Visas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As of mid-2025, around 70 countries offer “digital nomad” visas<\/strong><\/a>. In general, to qualify for one of these visas (the detail of which varies from country to country), you have to be employed, usually by an international company. You also need to earn a certain amount every month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If a US or other non-EU citizen is planning to base themselves in an EU country, however, there are other factors to consider too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUS and non-EU passport holders have to follow the\u00a090 days out of 180 rule for countries in the Schengen area<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d Peckham says. \u201cTraveler tracking of both business and personal trips is key. If your traveler is doing both, those days are going to add up to the maximum number allowed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
