The environmental impact of business travel is a key focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Providing the right information to travel managers, bookers and travelers, which gives them the opportunity to make more sustainable travel choices and reduce carbon footprints, is essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our latest webinar, <a style=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reedmackay.com\/webinar\/how-to-empower-your-travellers-to-make-more-sustainable-choices\/\"><b>How to empower your travele<\/b><\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reedmackay.com\/webinar\/how-to-empower-your-travellers-to-make-more-sustainable-choices\/\">rs to make more sustainable choices, <\/a><\/strong>is led by Reed &amp; Mackay\u2019s Sustainability Director Chris Truss, VP Business Development, US, Irene Bar-Am and Head of Product Marketing, Edd Harris. They explore why now is the right time to deliver a more sustainable travel program; where travel buyers are experiencing the biggest challenges; the steps required to deliver a sustainable travel program; and how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reedmackay.com\/sustainability-toolkit-carbon-aware-notifications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reed &amp; Mackay\u2019s latest technology innovation<\/a> can help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>WHY IS NOW THE RIGHT TIME FOR A SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL PROGRAM?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Truss highlighted that corporations should be integrating sustainability holistically into their travel programs, if they\u2019re not already doing so. This is driven by four main reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGovernment legislation around reporting sustainability \u2013 sparked by the Paris Agreement in 2016 \u2013 is either here or about to be implemented, ranging from the <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.ec.europa.eu\/capital-markets-union-and-financial-markets\/company-reporting-and-auditing\/company-reporting\/corporate-sustainability-reporting_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive<\/a> in Europe, coming in 2024, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/climate-change\/climate-change-regulatory-actions-and-initiatives\">legislative changes happening in the US<\/a>, which companies will have to comply with,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe second driver is companies\u2019 own CSR commitments \u2013 these are what attracts the best talent to the organization, as well as what wins new, and retains current, business,\u201d Truss adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other points to consider are corporate travelers\u2019 needs \u2013 in the past two years, <a href=\"https:\/\/wttc.org\/consumer-trends\">60% of travelers have&nbsp;chosen to travel more sustainably<\/a> \u2013 and the requirement for high-performing metrics that capture sustainability performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou have to ask, what does it mean to be really sustainable?\u201d Truss says. \u201cIt not only has to be around environmental concerns. It has to be about a company\u2019s financial sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;That includes financial reporting and demonstrating how being sustainable is delivering ROI for a business,&#8221; he adds. &#8220;And it&#8217;s also about social responsibility, around traveler wellbeing and performance.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>WHERE DO THE CHALLENGES LIE?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We asked attendees pre-webinar where they\u2019re experiencing challenges with implementing sustainability in their travel programs. Lack of education and awareness around sustainable travel took the top spot with 35%. And almost a quarter (24%) cited that their travelers are currently unwilling to compromise on mode or class of travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bar-Am explains this is where a TMC can provide recommendations and guidance. \u201cWe\u2019d firstly advise establishing who\u2019s accountable for implementing a company\u2019s sustainable travel program,\u201d she says. \u201cIt needs to be collective across the business, but it starts at the top with the C-suite. They need to lead the direction and communicate the vision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The webinar further highlighted how and where sustainability managers, travel managers, bookers and travelers can take action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>WHAT STEPS CAN YOU TAKE?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Truss revealed the six main steps that are necessary for a robust sustainable travel program \u2013 calculate, advocate, avoid, reduce, mitigate and compensate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese steps are where TMCs can assist clients,\u201d Truss adds. \u201cYou need a strong reporting platform and a well-written policy that aligns back to the company\u2019s CSR goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You also need an understanding of the business&#8217; objectives; then you can drive the sustainable travel program. And it doesn\u2019t have to be a speedy implementation. We\u2019d recommend slowly introducing change if this is completely new to the business.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies also have to establish what\u2019s stopping travelers from choosing the most sustainable option. Harris explains the challenges at hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTravel managers may say they don\u2019t have the right tools to make sustainable choices for their travelers.
