Following a recent site visit with a client to its capital Colombo, Reed & Mackay Events experts Senior Event Manager Nicole Solomon-Gomez and Senior Global Client Success Manager Nity Tripathi unveil their top reasons why Sri Lanka deserves consideration for your next event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. A destination that feels fresh and authentic<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sri Lanka offers something increasingly rare in the events world: that feeling of discovery. Colombo – the destination’s largest city, situated\u00a0on the island’s west coast – is a dynamic, multi-cultural city packed with rich local traditions and colonial history, while supported by modern development. And it doesn\u2019t feel over-commercialised, Solomon says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cColombo still feels unexplored, which lends a sense of excitement,” Solomon-Gomez says. “You can really feel the British colonial influence and the country’s own rich history, especially when meeting locals and embarking on a walking tour through the city. For clients looking for a memorable destination, that sense of originality can be a major draw.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why this matters for events:<\/strong> Delegates can feel like they\u2019re experiencing somewhere new and exciting, rather than another familiar conference city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite its emerging status, Colombo is easy to navigate. The international airport is just 45 minutes from the city via modern highways and the city itself is compact enough to get around easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSri Lanka is already well versed in hosting large-scale events, particularly major sports events, so the infrastructure is good to go. And Colombo airport isn\u2019t so super busy that it\u2019s crowded; in less than half an hour of landing, we had our luggage,\u201d Tripathi says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why this matters for events:<\/strong> Smooth arrivals, reliable transport and government-backed infrastructure reduce friction for global delegates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Five-star hotels and excellent value<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Colombo boasts a strong inventory of five-star hotels, many with large on-site ballrooms. These are ideal for conferences where keeping delegates under one roof is critical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are lots of wonderful authentic five-star hotels along Galle Face Road, facing the beach and Port City. They\u2019re accessible, offer high security and are incredibly cost effective for what you get,\u201d Solomon-Gomez explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From an organiser\u2019s perspective, that value proposition is a key selling point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEven if you\u2019re booking premium economy flights for delegates, Colombo comes out as a cost-effective option. The five-star hotel packages offer incredible value for money,\u201d Tripathi adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why this matters for events:<\/strong> Premium experiences without premium price tags make the destination ideal for conferences, especially those that double as incentives or offer delegates the opportunity to stay on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If there\u2019s one takeaway both Solomon and Tripathi have when talking about Sri Lanka, it\u2019s the hospitality. Sri Lanka\u2019s service culture consistently exceeds expectations and leaves a lasting impression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe hospitality, warmth and friendliness of the staff and locals was one of the key highlights. It\u2019s on another level, where we felt they went above and beyond to meet our needs,\u201d<\/em> Solomon-Gomez says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That warmth is amplified when supported by the right local partners, Tripathi adds. \u201cThe Destination Management Company (DMC) we worked with made us feel genuinely special. With staggered arrivals and complex logistics, that level of care was a huge selling point and will really wow delegates,\u201d<\/em> she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why this matters for events:<\/strong> Exceptional service elevates the entire experience and reflects positively on the host organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. CSR opportunities that resonate with boards and delegates<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Colombo enables Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to be more than a tick-box exercise. There are opportunities to support local communities while creating emotional, purpose-led moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe CSR opportunities completely changed my mindset on how this part of a programme can be so worthwhile. We visited a school for children with sight and hearing challenges and it created a real emotional outburst. It hit a chord with our client too,\u201d Tripathi explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solomon-Gomez agrees. \u201cIt was such an eye-opener in terms of where corporates can invest in local communities. We\u2019re seeing more clients asking for CSR activities as part of their event, such as beach clean-ups and plant restoration projects, and Sri Lanka presents the chance to do something really impactful,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you go in with the right mindset and partner with the right DMC, the cultural elements are incredible. From heritage dancing to storytelling, every performance has meaning,\u201d Tripathi says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solomon-Gomez highlights the flexibility this creates for planners. \u201c<\/em>There\u2019s such a huge variety of cuisine and venue options. The venues are unique and grand and there are also great contingency options if the weather changes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sri Lanka is a destination that offers an easy blend of city energy and beachside relaxation. \u201cThat proximity to the beach alongside a dynamic city is such a key selling point,\u201d Solomon-Gomez says. \u201cSunsets along the beach would be amazing for informal evening activities and dinners.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Colombo is just the starting point. \u201cIf clients are open to travelling an additional couple of hours, there are even more beautiful destinations after you\u2019ve experienced the metro feel of Colombo,\u201d Tripathi adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
