Airlines are increasingly committing to practices such as dispensing with single-use plastic or upcycling and recycling employee uniforms. And <a href=\"https:\/\/aviationbenefits.org\/environmental-efficiency\/climate-action\/infrastructure-efficiencies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ground facilities and airports are also taking responsibility to become more energy efficient in a number of ways.<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p>Encouragingly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/autumn-budget-2024\/autumn-budget-2024-html\">the UK government committed to extend the Advanced Fuels Fund<\/a> by another year \u2013 an initiative that will support Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production \u2013 in the October 2024 budget. And, as <a href=\"https:\/\/reedmackay.com\/how-can-sustainable-aviation-fuel-help-decarbonise-travel\">Reed &amp; Mackay partners with world-leading SAF producer Neste<\/a>, our clients have the choice to buy SAF at scale and help reduce business travel\u2019s environmental impact.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do h<strong>otels<\/strong> highlight their sustainable practices?<\/h2>\n\n<p>Choosing eco-friendly hotels is an essential part of planning a sustainable business trip and plays a key part in reporting sustainable practices across your travel supply chain. While there are many sustainability standards hotels can sign up to, look out for specific details on their websites. Here, they should highlight if they&#8217;re using renewable energy across the property and report on their energy consumption. In addition, they should point to whether they use efficient water-recycling systems, local resources and eco-friendly suppliers.<\/p>\n\n<p>The Global Sustainable Tourism Council offers recognised standards such as <a href=\"https:\/\/earthcheck.org\/what-we-do\/certification\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EarthCheck Certified<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greengrowth2050.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Green Growth 2050<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/greenkeyglobal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Green Key Global Eco-Rating<\/a>. Also look out for certifications awarded by <a href=\"https:\/\/reedmackay.com\/reed-mackay-retains-industry-certifications\">ISO 14001<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/ecovadis.com\/solutions\/iq\/?utm_source=Google%20&amp;utm_medium=paid&amp;utm_campaign=06-2023-IQ-Google%20Ads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EcoVadis<\/a>. And <a href=\"https:\/\/reedmackay.com\/our-platform\">Reed &amp; Mackay\u2019s proprietary technology<\/a> also labels Sabre\u2019s Eco-Certified hotels. Each has been certified by a partner whose standards closely align with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council&#8217;s criteria.<\/p>\n\n<p>In addition, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ecommons.cornell.edu\/items\/f50b30f1-40ea-4c87-95d0-83c8009f6497\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cornell Hotel Sustainability Benchmarking Index<\/a>\u00a0from Cornell University in the US gives hotels the opportunity to benchmark energy, water and carbon performance against other hotels in the same climate zone, class or city.<\/p>\n\n<p>Looking to centralise standardisation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstravelnewseurope.com\/Accommodation\/WTTC-and-Biosphere-partner-to-help-standardise-hotel-sustainability\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) and sustainability management and certification system Biosphere have teamed up to advance the industry&#8217;s sustainability standards<\/a>. This means the WTTC\u2019s Hotel Sustainability Basics verification and Biosphere&#8217;s methodology will be integrated to \u201ccreate a comprehensive international framework for the sector, with a unified vision connected to the UN\u2019s Sustainable Development Goals\u201d.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Restaurants<\/strong> &#8211; sustainable accreditations<\/h2>\n\n<p>When dining in local restaurants on a business trip, ask about the sustainable practices they use across their travel supply chain. Does it use organic produce and\/or local ingredients with easily traceable provenance? Book hotels close to public transportation or within walking distance to company offices, client locations or event venues. Many major cities also have bicycles or scooters available for rent.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Event venues<\/strong> practicing sustainability<\/h2>\n\n<p>Find out if the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgbc.org\/leed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">venue you\u2019re booking is LEED-certified<\/a>. The certification is used internationally to recognise &#8220;highly efficient and cost-saving green buildings, which offer\u00a0environmental, social and governance benefits&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n<p>Choose venues and hotels near the airport or easily accessible by public transport to decrease transport emissions. Alternatively, can delegates car share or can you book transfers to venues via electric buses?<\/p>\n\n<p>Consider making an event as digital as possible, using the technology available at the venue. Other areas to take into account include whether the venue has a recycling and a food waste policy. Does its catering use locally sourced produce and offer reusable or biodegradable cutlery? And does it partner with any environmental initiatives?<\/p>\n\n<p>Other questions to ask include whether the furniture is made of sustainable resources and are single-use plastics banned? Are event badges and lanyards recyclable?
